Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS)

ATIS is an airport information short range transmission, broadcast in the VHF band of frequencies, which contains essential information about conditions at the airport.

 

We'll use Venizelos' ATIS broadcast from 19/10/2007 as an example.

This is the transmission that was broadcast on frequency 136.125 MHz:

Here is Athens Venizelos airport ATIS information Delta, recorded at 1320.

As we can see above, ATIS contains weather information which we find in METARs but it also includes airport information such as runways in use and the Transition Level.

In reality, depending on conditions, ATIS may include further information such as runway Braking Action, radionavigational aid station failures etc.

Wind 180 degrees 8 knots, visibility 10 kilometers or more. Clouds few 2500 feet. Temperature 24, dew point 8. QNH 1012 hectopascals.
